Back in Barcelona — three tasty re-discoveries.

After three years living in Barcelona and countless visits, I thought I’d share three of my favourite food/drink spots in the city. Here is what to do: 1) read my Barcelona food guide and 2) go visit the Catalonian capital, just for the food!

Tapas can be tricky. The abundance of mediocre, overpriced or just plain boring Tapas restaurants in Barcelona is a fact. In these hard times, here is a place that won’t disappoint you — Papitos, Just off the Boquería market in the Raval neighbourhood you’ll find delicious and fresh food straight from the market. My suggestions are: calamares (squid), almejas (clams) and buñuelos de bacalao (cod).

SIRVENT ORXATERIA GELADERIA

Just off Plaça Universitat/Ronda Sant Antoni is where you find my favourite Horchata spot in Barcelona. An Horchata (or Orxata) is a typical drink from Valencia made from tiger nuts, water, and sugar. When it’s hot outside and all you can think of is ice, water, air conditioning and go swimming then the Horchata is exactly what you need. It’s icy, it’s refreshing, it has vitamins and digestive virtues. What else would you ask for? If you’re not in Barcelona this summer, try listening to the Vampire Weekend called Horchata — and just imagine the deliciousness of this nutty milky sweet and summery drink!

LA BÁSCULA

If Tapas can be tricky, then finding nice and tasty vegetarian/vegan food is impossible. But don’t despair, La Báscula in my old neighbourhood El Borne is where to go. It’s an Argentinean co-op serving the best veggie food in town, ecological, biological, you name it — they got it. My recommendations are: the kofta, guacamole/hummus, the piadinas, the empanadas (see picture), the tabbouleh and the home made pasta. P.S. Their Horchata is well worth trying as well!
