Cathrine Raben Davidsen // House of the Ax

Her biography makes her sound as clichéd as any artist you might come across. But get to know Cathrine Raben Davidsen and you’ll realize she has more originality in her hands than you may have thought.

She was born the daughter of a fashion designer in Copenhagen in 1972. The house in which she grew up was an all around creative one and she doesn’t hesitate to describe her father’s job as a strong frame of reference in her own work. In 2003 she graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and was ready to take over the world.

World domination is yet to come, but with a creative output in paintings, drawings, prints and ceramics she has slowly risen to a recognized spot amongst the top contemporary artists in Denmark.

Her fragile, mythological and sometimes dreamy characters and art-historical figures make you wonder just what lies behind her delicate brushes. Her style is not unlike something seen before, but Cathrine manages to give her work a touch of originality that is distinctively her own.

Now world domination is one step closer with her brand new exhibition, House of The Ax, which just opened at Kunstforeningen Gl. Strand. The title refers to the myth of King Minos whose famous labyrinth was designed so that once you got in it was impossible to get out. It won’t be impossible to get out of House of The Ax, but it might just prove hard as the exhibition is a fascinating journey through a labyrinth of self-biographical experiences and universal phenomenon’s in the shape of myths and cosmic symbols.

The Exhibition House of The Ax is open now and runs until the 15th of April at GL Strand.
