With graffiti as her guide, photographer Agnete Schlichtkrull roams the streets looking for love of the declarative kind. We spoke with her about how she plans on sending a little love back into the world.
Who are you and what do you do?
My name is Agnete Schlichtkrull and I am a freelance photographer from Vesterbro, Denmark. I mostly do portraits, atmospheric shots and ads, but my passion is my project 1til1.
What’s your 1til1 project all about?
The project is a way of showing that there is so much love around us – if we choose to see it. Some call drawings on streets and buildings vandalism. I see endless love declarations. There are hearts everywhere. On the walls, roads, benches, fences… All of these declarations surrounding us are dedicated to the city, to each other, to my sister, to you and to me. The world is what you put into it.
Besides that, the project is also a way of exploring the city with the street art as my guide. It takes me to streets and areas I wasn’t familiar with and makes me see things in a different way.
How did this project get started?
It all started when I stumbled upon a beautiful heart on a fence, captured it in a photo and gave it as a present. I began to wonder how many hearts I could find, and then aimed to discover 365. One for each day of the year. I still photograph hearts when I find them and then I replace some of the older pictures. But there are always 365.
Do you have any further plans for 1til1?
I would love the project to become a postcard calendar. That was my initial idea. Each day you would be able to tear off a heart and send it to someone you care about, send a little love back into the world. I dream of creating this calendar or even a book with all of the hearts, if only I could find a way to finance it. I have just opened an ArtRebels store where you can buy my hearts memory game, and nine of my favorite photographs in a range of sizes.
Do you have a favorite? What’s the story behind it?
I love the one from Kødbyen because it is the only unfinished heart. And it’s made of stickers. This one is another favorite, it’s the most recent picture. I moved to Vesterbro in August last year and I discovered these hearts in my street. They made me feel so welcome!
