The second trip of The Jaunt is taking us to the beautiful coastlines of the city Porto in Portugal. While the northern provinces of Portugal are known for it’s production of the Port wine, the coastline is widely known for it’s superb surfing opportunities. Meanwhile the most exciting and interesting contemporary art and illustration is largely coming from Porto, instead of the capital Lisbon. The Maastricht based artist Collin van der Sluijs will be traveling down to Porto to enjoy the atmosphere, explore the city and make new friends.

There, after quitting with what I was studying at the time, I also graduated in illustration and animation.

Then after spending half a year in Barcelona I’ve moved to Copenhagen, because of a beautiful and unexpected series of coincidences, and here now I work as  freelance illustrator, animator and sometimes graphic designer.

What kind of art do you make?
Mostly I do illustration because I love to draw stories, words and thoughts. In my drawings I try to represents what is suspended between people, between the words that they say each other, between a question and the answer.

Every picture that I create has something behind, which can be as long as a story or as short as a single word.

Sometimes I also like to make sweet little animations and silly gifs or experiment with printmaking and graphic.

What three unusual things do you love?
Get lost in new cities, smell of paper and books, names of flowers.

Tell us 5 people who have had a serious impact on your life?
I think almost every people you meet in your life has serious impact on what you are. So I can’t say 5 names, it’s just about all the people that has made me understand how great is to be yourself and how important is to try to do what you love in your life, no matter what you risk trying.

If you could have a superhero power, what would it be?
Stop the time to see without hurry how beautiful is now.

Any secret talents up your sleeve?
Always be curious, and your life will never get boring.

On Friday June the 14th the Mayhem (Ragnhildgade 1, Copenhagen NV) will host the first event organized by Thaumatropical. It will be a mixed-arts event involving a sound + art performance by the Italians Colorful Mountain and a concert by the experimental Danish band Silvercords.

Thaumatropical organizes exhibitions, pubblications and mixed-arts performances (focusing especially on the music-art interaction), selecting artists and venues that stand out for the originality of their projects and characterized by atypical paths and histories, possibly asking them to challenge themselves on new fields, or simply giving space to the extreme, the unheard and the weird.

The concept behind the ancient Thaumatrope toys is the creation of something new, an image, that appears from the fusion of two elements that exists on different surfaces of the same object. A type of magic trick in which the two realities enrich each other’s meaning.

Colorful Mountain are Mattia Lullini and Nico Pasquini, the project is born as a psychedelic ambient band in Bologna, Italy on the summer of 2010 and is now evolved into a more complex artistic project. Nico Pasquini plays the lap-steel guitar building psychedelic dark ambient rhythms and expanded solos improvising over hypnotic drumbeats. Meanwhile Mattia Lullini paints live creating – with an improvised approach – his decoration based animal’s masks, the lines, mixing ancient tribal decorations and futuristic architectures, build enigmatic art-pieces.The concept is a multi-disciplinary improvised performance in which music and painting interact and respond as musical instruments with the aim of creating a merged audio/visual output, a psychedelic journey through the trees and the desert, the stars and the suns.

Silvercords, on the other side, was founded in 2004 as a base for Sara Czerny (Family Underground, Shosanna La Fayette, JL and Timeless Reality) and Nicolas Kauffmann (Family Underground, Timeless Reality and Just Leaving) to explore the more extreme flatline drones and extrapolations between stasis and microtones. It’ has been released on labels like Time-Lag Records and Into The Lunar Night. This will be the first concert in a long time for this brilliant Copenhagen’s outfit, music to stop breathing by.

Hi! I’m Mattia Lullini and my job seems like it is drawing and in fact I do it all the time. I like to work especially on illustrations since I like to tell stories and on walls because I love how big and interesting as a medium they can be and to get dirty with paint. I also like to skateboard, to play and dj weird music and to travel for work.

I grew up in a small town close to Bologna in Italy where I was born on a summer night of 1985, then after some years, after travelling a bit, after living some months in the U.S. and one year in Turin (Italy) I decided this summer to move to Copenhagen with a lovely red-haired girl and settle here into a lovely house where we both live and share our studio together.

Also I love to convey ideas in very simple forms using symbols and metaphors, I’m so fascinated when a picture keeps on revealing something new every time you look at it!

Last but not least, I love to write and illustrate books which I think is the most special of challenges and I have just finished to write and illustrate my first book which is a children’s book called “Baaj”.

3) the bands Sonic Youth and Lightning Bolt;

4) the Belgian artist, musician and label owner Dennis Tyfus;

I graduated and worked as a researcher in Middle Age History and Literature, so I can (and love to) profusely speak about many things which most of the people consider as very boring. Does that count as a talent?

A couple of weeks ago I did a mural on Rådhuspladsen here in Copenhagen. By chance the photographer Tobias Nicolai stopped by while I was working on the piece.

He decided to spend a couple of hours documenting the process. He uses an analogue camera when shooting. Now the film is developed and the pics are ready for your eyes to feast on.
